  • Acoustic vs Electric

Posted by UTBMXCruiser on November 12, 2024 at 10:10 am

I have multiple electric guitars I’ve acquired over the years. Some cheap and some not so cheap mainly just as a collection. But I don’t have a decent acoustic worth spit. I assume I can do all these things to learn within this course on an electric. And then maybe invest in a nice acoustic at some point if I feel it’s worth it. So off I go with a transmitter and headphones on a Squire Strat. Also have a genuine Fender Telecaster among others. Am I way off base???

I’m fairly new here so others may chime in who have been at this 20 times as long as I have but in my opinion there’s not really any reason you couldn’t play along with Tony on an electric. I do a lot of the challenges (exercises) on both an acoustic and an electric guitar. Sure there might be certain songs we do where the sound is suited for the acoustic guitar but it’s fine to use an electric for this course.

Definitely. For the purposes of TAC either would be fine.

Hi Cruiser / All … I’m having to swap between my acoustic guitar and Strat copy for various reasons .. some may gel with others … arthritis .. More room on the acoustic for my still soft pudgy finger tips, but they get sore quickly … No callouses yet!

The electric is easier to hold the strings down on but .. there’s much less room for my fingers to “clear” the clean strings.

So I’m going over the lessons from Tony on the Strat and then spending time on placement and finger memory on the acoustic.

While I’m on .. I bought some Rubbing alcohol for my left hand fingertips … any other “tips” .. sorry … or suggestions?

    Cheers Bobby in Aberdeen, Scotland

You are perfectly fine using electrics for the lessons. They are easier to play than acoustic, and I often use mine for practice. As for an acoustic, it’s not necessary to spend a lot of money need for a good one. There are the Taylor GS Minis, Orangewood vhas some excellent guitars and are extremely reasonablly priced Yamaha, Ibanez, and many others that have lower cost options for some great guitars. I’ve also bought cc a action for cfraction of the cost. This is a highly competitive route. There are some great finds kn Facebook Marketplace. There is Reverb, which has a lot of used and new. Ebay another option. Don’t get hung up on the the cost defining whether its a better choice. I’ve bought online often and have been very happy overall with the guitars. But I learned during Covid and it wasn’t viable to physically play many guitars. I relied a lot on videos and recommendations found online from the forums. Nowadays, it is easier to find a guitar locally and at least try it out before buying. Good luck!

gotta do what you can to getter done. Electric vs Acoustic is like organ vs piano: many things transfer and many things are unique to the instrument.
