  • Percussion on strings

I’ve been here 11 months, playing every day, and a number of our challenges involve those darn little Xs in the tab. Personally, I don’t think they sound all that great in a song, but there they are. But, I can NOT figure out how they’re done! The video is jerky and doesn’t follow the audio on my ancient laptop, so I try to guess by the sound Tony makes doing them. It sounds like a uniform “thup” (not thump). Are the strings hit with the knuckles/nails of the picking hand, or strummed over muted strings (though some strings ring when I try that), or what? There needs to be a skill course on just this, and maybe also palm muting which I also cannot do.

Hey Barbara, Tony is deadening the strings for the 2 notes. Simply use your fingers to put slight pressure on the strings, and he is picking eachmstring separately. Because you’re placing light pressure on the two strings, they’ll be muted when you pick them.

      Thanks, Loraine, that worked!
