Are there actually songs?
Posted by jmead on December 17, 2024 at 6:47 pmHi to all I have been doing this program for a few months but honestly I think I am missing something as I work through the lessons I never feel like I am getting the full song? Have I just not been paying attention because I rarely get through the lesson daily. Would love some input on this!
Also, does anyone know if there a good place to start to learn to play songs? I would like to learn some Christmas songs like joy to the world. Really appreciate the guidance and help!

I’ve just joined 12/11/24…you have a great question…I would like to hear the replies…I’ve been playing on and off since 1979, but my life got in the way of my playing for so many years…I’m retired now and have the time and motivation to start a new with TAC…I subscribe to ultimate guitar too…so far I’m enjoying this…I get all the songs I want on ultimate guitar and all the lessons here on TAC…play on man…

Thanks Rodeo747! I actually just did the same thing with ultimate guitar!

@jmead, I’ll chime in here. In my opinion, TAC is teaching you how to play guitar, how to create a consistent routine, changing up the challenges weekly to keep one stimulated, and always trying different things. Not learning songs per se. We learn elements of songs, and pretty much all important items are included in the lessons. I think learning actual songs is up to you. There are a number of sites I go to for learning songs. I would rather not post out of respect for TAC. I would be happy to share if you want to PM me. I do use Chordify quite a bit. It’s free, and you only get one free song a day. You can pay more for all the extras. What I like about Chordify is, the notes play along with the music so you can follow and see the chord changes in real time. Hope this helps. I’m sure other more experienced folks will also reply.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! Like Rodeo747 said life gets in the way and I kind of play in spurts but I really feel that these daily challenges I am getting better but getting better at technique and lessons is not really my goal, I just want to start playing songs and I really struggle with strumming and what goes where!

Thanks for explaining. I was wondering the same thing. So, learn the fundamentals here and go elsewhere to play songs.

Thanks for the input. Do you have a guitar teacher that you also use?

In regards to understanding strumming & “what goes where,” make sure you are practicing items in the resources section as well, specifically the 30 days to play, the strumming mini course & how to read tab lesson. This should really help you get started playing songs.

Thank you for taking the time to respond J.T., I actually cruised right through that. I didn’t find that hard at all. My issue is trying to apply these lessons to real songs. I just don’t hear the patterns they use. Is that unusual? Are there any good recommendations or lessons on how to to improve this? Does TAC get into this at all?

Hey @jmead , it’s a valid question that has been asked by some, and I’m sure there are many that just don’t ask. TAC teaches the fundamentals that are necessary to play guitar. These are things that you’ll encounter as you continue your guitar journey and venture into learning songs.
In TACs former life, before they developed the new website a few years back, Tony’s lessons were more of a bluegrass type. He had what was called a song vault with fingerpicking and flatpicking songs. It was only available if you paid a separate fee to have it added to your account. When Tony was redesigning the site, he wanted 5o focus on the foundational skills, so he did not incorporate the song vault. However, for those that still paid for it, he created a site for it. II don’t believe the word site was meant to go public, but people began sharing it openly in the forum. So, here it is. https://hub-lkx8655w8n.membership.io/
As mentioned, Its songs are more bluegrass. If you prefer a different genre or current songs, you’ll need to do some research. There are many sites that teach you how to play specific songs. Just Google them. I won’t mention competitors of TAC here, but I can send you a DM with some sites, if you like. The Ultimate-guitar App is a large databank of song chord sheets, tabs and lyrics.

Thank you Loraine! I really do like the lessons but I am also not solely interested in just practicing. I sure would like to learn how to play songs. It seems in the past you will always get someone teaching songs from like 50 years ago that is not very impressive. I sure have to start learning basic rhythm guitar but I sure would love to even learn songs from the 80’s or at least a little less boring.
