30 days to play
Posted by just-tim on July 28, 2025 at 7:49 pmI finished 30 days to play! I did one topic per day and finished before 30 days. Should I move onto the 5 day challenge?

Look at the Skill Courses and see if there is anything that interests you. You can go into the Daily Challenges; I did right away. Just beware that some will seem great, and some overwhelming at first. That is okay. Just go through them; giving the 10 minutes (or a little more if you want, I did); and do the best you can. It is progress, not perfection, and when a lesson or skill comes around again later, you will see progress. Read about how the Daily Challenges work so you see there is a purpose to the method. Above all; enjoy!

@just-tim what @Philb said, just do what you can. Understand the Challenges are designed for players at multiple levels so naturally newer players will need to approach them on a more basic levels while the advanced folks can work on nuances way above our skill levels. Most of the Challenges will have a progression in them, the easier stuff is at the beginning of the lesson. That may be all you can do sometimes is play a single measure or only a few notes in this measure or that one. It tends to get more technical and/or just plain harder throughout the week.
I always try to find some small gain, I call them nuggets: a little portion of the challenge that I was able to do in the end that I couldn’t in the beginning. It will amaze you as you watch Tony introduce the challenge and you might think to yourself: “No way, that’s so far out of my wheelhouse!” and then 5 minutes later you are starting to get it under your fingers! Once I have had a little light bulb moment like that I have my takeaway. Always mark complete, you don’t have to play all the way through to call it complete!

Just as others mentioned here— have FUN with it all…. (and really enjoy the sounds that you are making).
Maybe try to be “just a little beyond” your comfort zone for a good part of your learning sessions. (Mike G has always said to remember………there is a big difference between learning and practicing!).
Anyway– congrats on completing the 30 Days to play!!! Now– go exploring!

Hey Tim, Congratulations on completing the 30 days to play course. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment when you complete it.
After taking the 30 Days to Play, it’s suggested to take the next 6 chords, the 5 day routine, and the stretching course, and to jump into the daily challenge. Some feel the challenges are too difficult in the beginning, but it’s suggested you at least try the daily for at least 10 minutes, then mark it complete. You can still work it, but don’t get caught up in perfection. It’s simply about trying. You will get better at it.
Check out the skills courses and choose what interests you. I always suggest starting with the Jumpstart courses for fingerpicking and flatpicking, because yo’ll learn some simple bluegrass songs, and then the strumming course. One would think strumming would be easy, but it is pretty challenging to most.
As Tony preaches, and as others have said, have fun. I’d add, be kind to yourself on days you might struggle with a concept or tool. It is a challenging instrument, but you will get better by trying consistently.
Make sure to celebrate your achievements and small wins. 🙂
