  • A New Guitar Journey Road Block

Posted by TMutter on October 25, 2025 at 11:11 am

Dont you just hate it when life serves up a new can of Whoop A$$ on you when least expected? A short bike ride on a sunny day along a nice paved trail turned into EMTs, first ever Ambulance ride, and evening in the ER. What I thought was sealed pavement turned out to be a washout fault in the paved trail 2″ wide and over a foot deep bringing my ride to an abrupt halt and driving me into the pavement. Multiple right shoulder fractures and a messed up left hand has put me on the sidelines for months. Fortunately my helmet did its job and I had no concussion or spine injuries. It could have. been so much worse. I am trying to crawl out of my pity party and study Fret Board Wizard, maybe pick up the harmonica while my bones do their thing.

I was just looking at your imaging graphic with your name up there and it made me think of my wife’s childhood guinea pig that they named after it’s coloring. It had white and peanut butter shades so they called it “Peanut Butter Fluffernutter”. If you added your name to it, it could really ring! lol!

I am so sorry Terry! I think you found the perfect solution to a whacked situation….work on the mental. Dive in deep on the Fret Whiz. Keep your routine if possible but change the practice from physical to mental. Sending healing vibes your way! I wish there were something more I could do! You could start a thread…healing with theory. Now that would be cool….when you are feeling better.

Thanks @jumpinjeff . I got a similar suggestion from a fellow TAC’r about keeping a journal through recovery to keep myself moving forward and on track. I am going to do it !

I’m sorry this happened Terry, because I know how important playing guitar is to you. Take it from someone who’s been dragged through the mud several times with injuries that put me on the sidelines to playing I can feel for ya. I’ll say this though. You’re allowed to have a pity party, because that’s just human nature.

I thought back to when you started. There’s no doubt in my mind, you’re a talented person that has many outlets. You’re a songwriter. You’re a guitarist. You were a performer. You’re a storyteller. You’re an entertainer on so many levels. You’ve put together singles and full sets and publish them you might even have CDs at this point. I don’t know, but I do know that you have the electronic versions on Spotify and other places you pick up on things so quickly and find so much jubilation (i’ve always wanted to use that word in a sentence ha ha) and have so much exuberance. It comes through every cell of you’re being. So what can you do?

You can do the fretboard wizard, which I think is a great outlet, if you haven’t done it in a while. You can do the harmonica, which I think is another great artistic outlet. You could continue your songwriting. If you don’t have keyboards go purchase an inexpensive keyboard at I used hand store. I purchased one for $20 at Goodwill. The guitar follows the same notes, chords, scales as piano. It would be very easy to learn the notes, scales and chords on a keyboard that you would typically use on the guitar, and you can put together some compositions.

Keep your chin up buddy guys reach out to me and direct message if you start getting down because trust me I’ve been there a lot of people have helped lift me up during the last several years so I’m there for you too. You got this!

      Loraine–

This is just a really great post! You’re always there to lift us up, pull us (OK, mostly me) out of the weeds, and always remind us of the good. Even in bad situations such as Terry’s.

Terry– yuh know, when one of us is hurtin’ we all hurt a little. We’re all hoping for a complete, speedy (as possible, anyway) recovery. Thanks for the update.

Thanks @Loraine – All good suggestions. I did start day 1 of FBW a few days ago. I cant do any of the exercises physically but I can mentally go through the motions. I did get my lyric journal out and started scribbling down some thoughts, and I do have a pretty good keyboard that I record with. Shoot me a message with your address and I will send you some CDs !

To finish my thoughts, you have been such an inspiration to me Terry, and I have loved watching your journey. I have no doubt that you’ll make it through this and come out stronger and more creative and more talented in the end

Sending healing energy! May you heal quick. I also like what the others have said about harmonica, keyboard, song writing etc. Good Luck!

Thanks @BarbaraM I am glad to report that during my recovery time I have done all of those things. Even have one song complete and another in work. I also was able to slowly ease an acoustic guitar under my arm the other day. I cant hold it properly but its almost there!
