  • Billy in the Lowground… Old Tune, New Skills

Posted by albert_d on March 13, 2026 at 4:25 pm

I am out of my comfort zone (which is supposed to be good, right)? I am learning to 1) use a Mac Mini 2) use Garage Band 3) Use OBS software 4) Use cameras and microphones 5) consider lighting 6) play in time. So, this is a short recording of a Bluegrass standard I found on Tony’s Old Song Vault for flatpicking to practice some of these exploratory skills. “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly… at first”. At least that is what my inner voice keeps telling me.

Thank you. At the fretboard summit workshop two years ago I learned if you want to get comfortable with flat picking, start by learning 10 old fiddle tunes. After that your learning will really start to take off like a rocket.

Nice! Albert, what are you using Garage band for? I have messed around a bit with recording, but haven’t figured out any real use for it. Thanks!

I used Garage Babd to capture the sound track for the two takes with the first being the rhythm and the second the lead. I used OBS to run the camera and then muted the OBS sound an laid the two sound tracks from Garage Band on top of each other and synced up the OBS for Video and the Garage Band for the sound. The OBS sound track had a lot of latency and didn’t sound right.

    I’m learning.

Well done, @albert_d . You nailed the song as well as the rest of your technical goals.

This is amazing. Way to push yourself! This is exactly the kind of thing that gets me frustrated when I try doing it at home. You are inspiring and motivating. Great job on the music too!! 🙂 I had to look up OBS – I use iMovie but maybe I should try that instead? Thanks for sharing – congrats on your new skills and can’t wait to see the next one!

I used a web cam and OBS software. I recorded the rhythm, then the lead while listening to the rhythm. Then I used Movavi software but you could use iMovie and synced them up.
