So I sold something and I have a little to spend to start my recording goal. I used the phone but frankly, it sounded pretty bad (me or the phone? Who knows?… lol). Anyway, I like production and want to learn some technique. Here is what I’m looking at doing after some advice here and some research. I know some folks here are really into this. I have a budget so this is a starting setup which I can upgrade if I ever get to the point of needing that.
    The Gear
USB Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB-C Audio Interface (4th Gen) – this seems to be pretty standard with a lot of people and a good place to spend a bit more for future expansion. Having the two mic inputs is important even if I’m not yet using two mics.

Vocal Mic: RØDE PodMic Cardioid Dynamic Broadcast Microphone – I know the standard here is the Shure SM7B but I can’t afford that one right now. This seems like a decent alternative.

Guitar: For now, rather than a mic, I have a pickup on my guitar as it is an acoustic electric so I’m going to try that plugged into the USB interface instrument port. I’ve seen some people online with that setup and it seems good enough for now.

    Software

Mixcraft 10.6 Pro Studio – seems like a good merging of easy to learn/use and pro features with a not-too-steep learning curve. Also, is not a monthly fee… you buy it outright.

Thanks in advance for the input!

I’ve been looking into this lately and I find the Fender Quantum Creator and Complete bundles interesting. It includes the Quantum Pro daw software with no monthly fee.

Being a neophyte at this recording stuff. I’ll follow this with great interest. i do use a Shure 57 through my AER 60 but haven’t tried to record myself. I do run the Mic through a ART Tube Mic Preamp and get a great tone through the AER.

That sounds like a great setup. I use the same FocusRite and love it. I’m not familiar with that particular mic but have never been disappointed by the Rode brand. I feed my both the microphone and the guitar via the pickup through the FocusRite and it works great.

I’ve never heard of Mixcraft 10.6 Pro Studio. For just recording yourself it will probably do fine. The advantage of the bigger name DAWs is that there are 1000’s of tutorials on how to use them. I tried 3 different ones that all came with equipment that I purchased and settled on Ableton. I probably use 1% of the features but it works great for me.

Thx for the advice! I’ll check out the Ableton and also the online tutorials. What people say about the Mixcraft is it is more intuitive and the closest thing to Garage Band on the Mac. I have time to look and am in no particular hurry. One thing I like about the Mixcraft is that there is a 2 week full-featured trial so when I get ready to lay down some tracks, I’ll start that and see how I like it.
