Where did I come up with that? (Incorrect G chord formation)
Currently in 30 day challenge on G chord lesson. I grew up shaping the G chord with ring finger on low E, middle finger on A string and pinky on high E. Where did THAT come from? Also when I move my correct G chord index and middle fingers down to the A and D strings, it’s a beautiful sound, is that a C chord by any chance?

I originally learned a standard G as you described but since with TAC , the “Folk G” has become just a familiar. Both are good and I use whichever sounds good or whichever sets my fingers up for the next chord or chord variation better. And yes your change as you described would be a Cmaj7 (you added a B to the CEG or the 7 to the 1-3-5 with a C root).

I’ve always seen that called a Cadd9. It is a beautiful chord.

From what I’ve seen and heard over the years, most learned the G the way you described it. I say it is the electric guitar G, just to differentiate it from the Folk G. I still use the other G a lot, but I form it with the pinky on 1, middle on 5 & index on 6.
