  • how to choose bass walk notes

Posted by Mac_ on September 29, 2026 at 7:48 am

With regards to day 1 of the 5 day bass walk challenge: I understand which note to hit on the 1 beat, the root of the chord, but how do you choose the notes on the 3 and 4 beats? Tony shows that I can do a bass walk between any two chords but how do you choose the notes? Thanks

In this example try to think less of where you are and more of were you are going. All of these walks start lower and walk up to the root. There is a pattern here if you can spot it or know it. Notice how both the walks to up to both the C and the G are the same but for the different string? now think about C’s relationship to D. D is one step higher (step being two frets). This lets you land on that open D using the same principle pattern but looking different because….the root is on the open string. If you were to go from say Am to G the walkup example used for G still works. Say you were going from F to C the walk up used for the C still works. Have you encountered the Nashville Number system yet? Let me know if that makes sense to you. Conversational typing about music can be challenging.
