Tony, thanks for cheering me on in my new venture, flatpicking! I have this song under my fingers now but having one problem that keeps tripping me up! In the 2nd measure of the printed tab (1st one after the intro measure), the G measure- it goes 0-4-5 on the D string, then 0-4-0 on the G string… When I am trying to build speed thru this part, I find myself doing more of a hammer-on at the 4 in the
0-4-0 part. Also happens less so with the 0-4-5 too. So then it’s like I already played that B note as a hammer on but then I go to pick it after that… So it’s like I am playing the same note twice and they slam into each other and the metronome gets all mad, has a meltdown and walks off the job… Totally messes up my timing and then I start hearing some swing in my tempo. I just want it it sound machine-gun steady like yours. I don’t think it sounds good played as a hammer-on but that’s what I am getting when I try to play it fast. This measure appears throughout the peice so I could use some advice- thanks so much and can’t wait to post my first flat pickin video to the Forum!!!
Carol,
I am so pumped you are still digging into this tune. I certainly don’t want your metronome getting all mad so I would recommend slowing way down through this difficult part to make sure you are picking every note. Often times hammer ons replace pick strokes in flatpicking and that very phenomenon can throw off our pick direction and ultimately our timing. So go slow and deliberately pick every note, although there are some repeats of notes, I think you will find if you just focus on syncing your picking with the beat you will get this part for sure 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
Hi Tony! I decided to venture into the world of FLATPICKING, yikes! Well if there is a place in the universe to learn this, I’d say this is it!!! I’ve always enjoyed all of your flat picking songs, and also the way the other TACers are able to play them so effortlessly… P.S. This is difficult for me, have a whole new respect for you guys!!! So here I am taking the baby steps with my flat pick, playing on my Squire Strat with headphones to the amp (neighbors). Once I get this under my fingers I will have to record a RAW video at my sister’s house, or maybe at the Let It Be Studio 🙂
Have a question, and sorry if you have already addressed this, but aren’t the slow, medium and fast practice clips supposed to auto loop themselves? Mine are not doing so, and by the time I get myself situated after hitting the play button, you are already done 🙁
Any help? Thanx, and really loving Kickin Rocks so far!!
Carol,
Welcome to the fantastic world of flatpicking!!! I am so proud of you!!! I never thoguht his day would come, but soon you will covet a Dreadnought Bluegrass Machine I am sure 🙂 As for the looping I will have to look into that as they should auto loop. It is possible these were older videos without that feature, but I will dig in and see what I can do.
Cheers,
Tony
