Lesson 1 of 0
In Progress

Wednesday, November 4

This is a day that allows you to make huge musical steps. Here is how it works: You will first learn a scale of a certain key and tonality (for example: D minor), you will then take the scale you learned and practice it until you are fairly comfortable with it, and then you will be able to use that scale over a chord progression designed to fit with that scale. This is a really fun day and it will allow you to not only learn and practice a scale, but you will also be able to experiment with it in a musical way. This is a day to explore your musical ideas and hear how they sound; a truly creative day!!!

  1. Hey Tony,
Those of us who know just enough to be dangerous tend to run scales while adhering to the rules of first position, second position, etc. You don’t seem to do that here. Am I just being too rigid in my approach to this?

BTW, I’m enjoying the practice plan so far and hoping I can stay consistent with it!!

    George

    1. George I’m thinking this too. Instead of sliding as per Tony’s vid, I tend to skip to the position and back again. Tony, like to comment?

      1. Kevin,

I definitely think the position approach keeps things more compartmentalized which is great for memory. After getting comfort with each position I tend to begin to blur the position adges 🙂 I hope that helps 🙂

        Cheers,
        Tony

    2. George,

This is an awesome question!!! You are not being to rigid at all, in fact I think when learning scales the position idea is fantastic. I always try and bend the rules quite a bit though and expose everyone to some different ideas and shapes. I think the position way of thinking is the most effective for memory though!!! I hope this helps you out 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

      1. Tony,

Thanks for your feedback. Given that I’m just beginning, it works for me to adhere to some rules until I become thoroughly familiar with the fret board. Then I’ll be able to wander around a bit without getting confused.

Thanks and have a great holiday!

        George

      2. George,

Thank you and you have a great holiday as well!!! Definitely give yourself some guidelines at first it will help a ton!!!

        Cheers,
        Tony

  2. Great mix and match for first three days. The content is just the right amount for 20 minutes a day to keep me coming back for more!

    1. Brian,

It really is a problem lol 🙂 To say that I am a fan of Martin’s is an understatement. The stable is chocked full of goodies, new ones and old ones 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony
