  1. Hi Tony,
I regularly circle back to all of the warm-ups. My question is many of the fingerpicking exercises use a different finger for all strings yet this one has a general rule. When do we follow the rule a d when do you break it? Thanks

    1. Glenn,

This question is awesome because I do break the rule… a lot. I woudl say that when approaching a song with “traditional fingerpicking” like an old blues tune, or freight train for example the three finger approach is quite solid. Whereas, when you play something in a “modern fingerstyle” the rules are much more elastic (this month’s song st. anne’s reel is a great example). Generally speaking if the alternating bass is present I default to the rule at least to start.

      Cheers,
      Tony

  2. I enjoy these warmups as well. I’ve already made a couple of your warmups part of my daily routine.

I have a question about your fingerpicking comment. You said you play notes on the G and B with your index (pointer) and high E with the middle. When (if ever) do you use your ring finger for fingerpicking? Thx.

    1. Greg,

Thank you for this question and comment!!! I am glad the warmups are worming their way into your routine 🙂 As for the fingerpicking… I do use my ring finger, and I must say I don’t always follow the “rules”… It really depends on the musical style and what notes I need to access… I try to train my ring finger to be strong and ready for when it is needed for a particular song. I hope that helps explain 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  3. Love these exercises! I love being able to stop and replay as many times as I need. They look difficult at first but with practice become easier.
