5 Patterns to Find Notes Fast
Posted by Scott H on August 1, 2026 at 9:33 amFretboard Wizard. Not clear on the purpose of the “5 Patterns to Find Notes Fast”. The notion is clear but practicing these “finger patterns” is not. Is the goal here to “memorize these finger patterns” such that I will quickly comprehend where a note lies on the fretboard? Or is it that I will be “playing” these 2-finger patterns, often? DISCLAIMER: I’m a newbie. Thanks for any enlightenment!

I use them to find the notes on the fretboard. It’s a lot easier to memorize 5 patterns than about 100 notes ! In time, you will utilize this knowledge in other things.

You bring up a valid point @scott-twoagmail-com : what is the goal. More specifically what is your goal. My goal was to learn guitar to the point where playing became intuitive instead of learned and memorized. This was an integral part of my learning process. What was hard for me to see at the get go was what I was going to need to get to my goal. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I would encourage you to focus in on “your” goal. By doing this you can measure your progress against yourself to see how you are progressing. This shows if you are benefitting from the track of instuction! In the overall scheme this knowledge is important because it actually explains all the relationships between the notes. Bottom line is I found it important enough to study for at least a decade but it was in line with my goals.

Hey guys! Thank you for your replies. My question was really focused on the specifics of those 5 patterns and whether the important part is memorizing the ‘spacing’ of the patterns or the finger dexterity for those patterns? IOW, is this a ‘mental’ exercise or a ‘physical’ exercise? That’s what I am not clear on. What is the aspect that I will be applying and appreciating over the long haul? As it is, the lesson presented 5 patterns and I’m like, “Yeah. So what?” Hope I’m making myself clear.

It is both a mental exercise and a physical exercise. Sometimes when things appear initially unclear, after different exposure to the same concept (presented differently) clarity happens like a light bulb turned on. When in doubt, keep going. we can fix anything later.

I don’t have FW so I’m kind of in the dark. I am assuming we are talking about the
C-A-G-E-D patterns? These are the shapes that you make with fingers 3-5 so you can barre with the 1. These are super useful to learn, even if you can’t produce much sound, knowing the shape is a fundamental part of learning the fretboard. But maybe you are referring to patterns for finding where notes repeat on fretboard, either same or higher octave.
-
The patterns are just to be able to find a particular note on the fretboard. An example would be going from any note on the low E string, go 2 strings up and 2 frets toward the guitar body and you have the same note.
-
Okay yeah, so those patterns are supposed to help you find notes quickly but in the beginning these formulas don’t help you much. I think it’s more useful to remember a group of notes:
