  • A “Good” Guitar

Posted by mcarlson_sb on March 23, 2023 at 9:39 pm

When I first started dabbling and bought a guitar I told myself I’d only get cheap ones “until I was good enough that it would make a difference”

    That day finally came.

(Note: my guitars aren’t bad. They are just all less than $200, used, ‘well loved’, etc.)

My Goya 1960’s nylon string folk guitar is amazing – but nylon strings have more of a campfire sound than I’m looking for.

And the Washburn Rover travel guitar’s small body means it’s voice has a small bit of banjo in it.

Neither fit the voice of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” which I’ve been working on.

I decided that this was a good enough reason to get a “good” guitar. I finally had enough experience and could discern what I wanted and what was missing.

    Today my Ibanez AW54CEOPN arrived.

It’s a beautiful acoustic steel string with built in fisher pickups.

Right out of the box I tuned up the Ibanez and strummed it – and OMG the sound!

    It’s SO much fuller.

The steel strings are so much the right sound.

It just has this amazing voice and character.

And now I understand how different guitars have different voices. And how much its a partnership with the guitar to make it sing.

    Mcarlson—-

This is such an awesome post, man!

I have 4 guitars, all acoustics….. none “expensive”……or what most would consider to be “good” guitars……. but they all have a “story” in my life.

I love them all, I’ll stand by ’em, and keep ’em.

THEY have brought me to where I’m at guitar-wise, and I ain’t turnin’ my back on ’em now. I’ll keep ’em till I’m done for.

    I’m a loyal old dog.

    BUT……..

I have never had……. THAT……… one guitar that REALLY knocks me over.

    And……. I ………. want ……..THAT……. guitar.

That’s why your post is SOOOOOOOO cool!!!

I’ll find the “right” one, one of these days, and pull the trigger………….

    I can’t WAIT!

    Thanks for sharing.

@mcarlson_sb Congratulations and happy NGD! You’ll have to post pictures of your new baby, and possibly a video showing off it’s voicing. I have many guitars. None are considered outrageously expensive, and several I picked up at auctions for bargain prices. Some I like, and a few I love. I added a 12 string,, a classical and a semi-hollow electric to my guitarsenal this past year. I plan on selling or gifting the few I rarely play or just don’t enjoy. Getting a new guitar that you just love makes a world of difference in playing. Hope you have lots of fun with your Ibanez.

I started with a Yamaha FG700, and it’s my favorite acoustic. I purchased a Taylor ES10, but got it home and found it didn’t sound as good as my Yamaha! I ended up returning the $800 Taylor, favoring my old go-to.

I also treated myself to a Variax electric (A Yamaha Pacifica with Line 6 modeling hardware) I can make it sound like a Martin, a Gibson, and even a 12 string! Then back to it’s Strat or Les Paul sound when I want to play some rock. You can even dial in alternate tunings…what a fun toy!
