  • Acoustic Challenges to Songs

Posted by GaryRKarr on March 10, 2025 at 3:11 pm

Hello from Geneva, Switzerland. I’m coming up on 90 days in TAC, and while I am grateful that my slightly-above-beginnner-level-but-not-near-intermediate technical skills have improved, I am now sitting here realizing I don’t really know how to play any new songs. My job is fairly intensive and stressful, so watching Tony go through the Daily Challenge for 10-12 minutes, and then spending about 10 minutes trying it myself is about all I really have time for during the week, and I don’t always have that. I’m glad I’m better at a few skills, but what I’m not getting out of the time I’m spending playing is actually learning and then playing a song from start to finish. Any tips for how I do that? (I’ll take time budgeting tips, even?) After all, the ultimate goal is to do more than just do the daily challenges, it’s to have a song book of one’s own, right?

Hi @GaryRKarr Welcome to the TAC community. Your question comes up frequently.

TAC teaches a player foundational skills that can then be applied when playing songs. Unfortunately TAC does not teach full songs. The purpose of TAC is to take the foundational skills and have the capability of using them when playing songs. That said, there are several things you can do.

The prior TAC website had a song vault where a member that opted for access, and paid for it had access to a linrary of fingerpicking and flatpicking song lessons. These were all bluegrass type songs, but it was a great place to learn and feel accomplishmemts. When TAC converted to the website and reorganized, they disbanded the song vault, but they made it available on its own website. These site has since been shared with just about anyone who wants access to it. I was a paying member and wasn’t too thrilled this happened, but I’ve since changed my stance and openly share it. Here is the link to the Song Vault. https://hub-lkx8655w8n.membership.io/

Many use Ultimate-guitar.com to access chord and tab sheets. If you listen to. Song and vocals, you can basically strum any song and sing it. You just need the chords, which this site provides, and you do not have to pay to access them.

There are many sites that offer up great lessons. I’ll message some to you. Out of courtesy to TAC, I won’t list them here.

YouTube has some good lessons. I’ll send a few to you.

@GaryRKarr I can guarantee you can squeeze out a few more minutes of play if you really prioritize. There has to be breaks in your day, or lifestyle changes that could be made if playing a bit more was a goal. You’ll also see some of these challenges again, and then you won’t need to spend as much time watching the lesson, and go right to the play along. This will also give you more time to play, and less time watching the video.

I often don’t even practice. Just play. 90% of my time is spent playing, and maybe 10% practicing. This was the best advise I ever got from one of my teachers. It doesn’t matter your skill level either. Find a couple of songs within your ability and just play. There are thousands of easy songs out there.

    Salut, Grietzi from Florida!

I’m a Canadian married to an American lady! I have lived in Geneva for a year and near Bern for almost 4 years, such a beautiful country! I’m originally Austrian and love my home but the Swiss Alps take my breath away.

I agree with you the goal is to learn beyond the daily challenges and be able to play full songs. However, these challenges gradually equip you with the skills to play many thousands of songs. It’s hard to see the forest right now with so many trees in the way. You can definitely turn your focus to learning a handful of songs, but if your time is limited, you may find the going slow in perfecting all the nuances of particular songs and this may be discouraging. Also this will take time away from TAC’s daily challenges so ultimately it may slow you down in your quest to play more songs.

    Bonne chance!

    Peter
