  • After a few days with Bitter Wine

Posted by Moonhare on October 12, 2022 at 3:47 am

A week ago I posted a “Work In Progress” of a song I was writing to try to practice the ‘alternate thumb’ bass pattern technique. Seems Tony couldn’t bear my fumbling about so posted a Monday daily challenge on the alternating thumb to give me some practice! Well it helped for sure.

So I’m now posting the proper version with the finished lyrics and some slightly different chord patterns. I’ve added a backing vocal and a little bit of a solo in the middle 8 to polish it up but it will work as a stand alone voice and guitar just fine and I hope to get along to a VOM soon and try it out (it is tsill a 1 in 10 chance of me getting to the end in one piece!).

Thanks a lot. I actually played it live today at our UK TAC get together and it went really well.

Very nice! That was a great touch adding the lead on top.

Thanks – I was messing around with the solo and then thought why not it over the top.

Have to agree with the others above, that all comes together beautifully! Adding the lead/solo was indeed a very nice touch. When I started learning guitar, I had no aspirations for writing songs, couldn’t even imagine doing so. But you and others in TAC are providing big inspiration. If and when you have time and/or inclination, maybe you could post your thoughts on the songwriting process for those of us who ponder giving it a try eventually?

I usuaIIy write instrumentals so this is a bit of a departure for me but the way I think of it is like telling a story. Intro-middle-end. A hook helps, ie Bitter Wine which repeats. But I don’t claim to be a songwriter really. I wrote the music and the lyric just started to come out of that. It is quite different from the Work in Progress so I’m not precious about throwing stuff out or rewriting bits that don’t fit in with the overall piece. I think everyone works differently though.

Thanks a lot. I have a rhythm guitar to go over the top now. Keep thinking of new layers

You defeated the odds (1 in 10?) and did it. Nice driving base thumb fits melancholy ambience of the song and I am impressed by your break. The polished product is worthy. I’ll have to play you a South Texas crying song one of these days.

Thanks. I played it at our recent UK TAC get together and somehow it raced away from me. Perhaps it was adrenaline. At least I know I can play it fast now!

This is so good. More like a “a fine wine” 😎

I get “notes” with a hint of Pink Floyd with that solo providing a nice “Gilmore finish”

    Well done!

I am big gilmore fan as well. His guitar solo’s so lyrical and emotionally moving!

    Moonhare-

    Wow, that was great, indeed.

Not sure I’m even qualified to make a comment as far as guitar-work goes, but I sure enjoyed the performance of this song– and also the song itself….. Good stuff.

One thing that stood out for me was your patient, relaxed demeanor thru the song. This is a big thing for me, because when I try to play and sing, I tend to almost try to “hurry things” somehow, maybe showing some anxious-ness, even to the point of speeding-up the tempo if I’m not careful.

Loved your “patient smooth-ness”. This is a quality I want to learn, and your song here was a perfect example.

    You have got “it” down!

Thanks so much for that really intuitive comment. Been away in the North Yorkshire Moors National park and continuing to practice and develop that alternating thumb so about to post that Work in Progress.

Moonhare you inspire. Beautiful chords and groove with your fingerpicking and voice. Solo was sweet too! Cheers!
