Blaze Foley Cover “If I Could Only Fly”
Posted by TMutter on May 8, 2022 at 9:35 pmBig thanks to Guy for introducing me to Blaze Foley. This is a cover of his beautiful song “If I Could Only Fly”. I am still trying to get the picking pattern down but will keep working on it.

First off great picking and vocals, especially in front of an audience! Secondly Blaze Foley? Now I’m going to have to look him up too.

Thanks ! Apparently Tony did a segment on Blaze a while back. Another guitar geek provided this link.

Merle Haggard would be proud to hear your cover.
You’re like him… an amazing songwriter. Thanks for presenting this.-
Marquita, Thank you for the kind words. I did not know that Merle recorded it. I like his version as well. Blaze is one of those artists that just never really saw much acclaim until years after they were gone. Blaze wrote this song in 1979. Merle made it a hit. John Prine made Clay Pigeons a hit as well. I love the stripped away style of Blaze – check this one out….. beautiful.

Beautiful job! Like you, I was blown away when I first heard Blaze Foley, after first hearing John Prine’s version of Clay Pigeons. If you haven’t already discovered it, I highly recommend Blaze’s “Moonlight Song” as well.
