  • C chord problem

Posted by Debv22 on January 4, 2024 at 1:16 pm

I am having so much trouble getting C chord!! it’s a really big stretch for my hand and I can do it, but I can’t get the G string to not go thunk!! I have tried getting my palm as close to the neck (actually, against the neck) I’ve gotten the most arch I can out of my fingers but my middle finger keeps touching the G string and it won’t sound right! Do you have any suggestions as to how I can do it correctly so that all my strings sound?

Hey @Debv22 – Try making the C with only 2 fingers to start. Forget putting your index on the first fret of the B string and just play it with your index and middle on the A and D strings. Practice that until it all sounds clean. Do some finger stretching exercises over the next few days and gradually try sneaking that old index back onto the B string until you get it clean. Take time and go slow.

Thank you I’ll try that, but where do I find finger stretches?

It is under Skills courses. This link [might] get you there. Have fun.

    Hi ya,

I have only two things I can recommend to you and the first one is pretty obvious, just keep pulling your hand off the chord and just keep placing it back there on that C chord position. This will be redundant for you but I’m guessing if you jut do this for like 10 minutes every day you’ll have it down by the end of a week’s time…

Secondly, and this might be a stretch but are you practicing on a guitar with a very large neck profile? Or, just a neck which doesn’t feel comfortable for you? Like a V-neck or a Fatback etc…

This might also be giving you an issue but I’m just guessing and I’m certainly not saying to go buy a new guitar either lol. Just something which is coming to mind here, good luck.

Might not help with your specific issue, but in general I find it very helpful to keep my fingernails on my fretting hand as short as possible.

one more suggestion @Debv22 – can you post a short video of you trying to do the C chord and then we can all see what might be going on with your technique.
