CAGED
ok i just got through the CAGED lesson (actually doing the last one tomorrow). Sometimes i think it makes sense, then other times i wonder what planet i am in…….I learn the C, then A, then G, then E, and finally D scales. However, i forget them the next day, and have to go look at it again. Is this expected? I also have some difficulty modeling what Tony does on the alternative fingering for chords as he moves up the neck. I am trying to follow the root notes ….Patience and do it a few more times??? Help!!!!!! thx

I had the same experience you are facing now….It took me a good long while to turn what was knowledge in my head, that theoretical barely understanding, into sounds that went direct from my heart to fingers to my ears. You will get it. I promise….somebody made that promise to me and I thought they were nuts but sure enough it connected and the struggle became intuitive intent. The great thing about TAC is the model of how to have fun while you are putting in your time in the saddle.

Question…… This is a simple-sounding (but huge) question:
Are you understanding it, or just memorizing it and then going thru the motions of playing what you have memorized?
When you start to realize the difference —- when you actually start to focus on the how and the why—- is when- (as Loraine says)- “you start to see the magic happen”.

That is indeed a great question. I think sometimes I do get the understanding, and other times I’m lost. Right now I’m just working on the scales whenever I have a chance between Daily challenge.

OK– I am certainly FAR from being any kind of expert on any of this- (and I don’t know if I’m even asking this the right way, but)- are you “working on the scales” in the sense of playing each note of that given scale…. just from memorizing each note location(?)……..
Or…. are you “working on the scales” in the sense of counting the frets— and “seeing” (and hearing) the major scale formula and its intervals…….. (?)
(hard to put into words— and I don’t always “get that right”; hopefully you understand).

From my very fragmented understanding, having learned only a pinch here and a dash there, I thought the simplest method to learn scales is primarily to follow a finger pattern:
Major scales:
i=index…. m=middle…. r=ring…. p=pinky drop=drop down 1 string
m…p – drop i…m…p – drop i…r…p
Major pentatonic scales follow the CAGED shapes up the fretboard

Pete– I guess I don’t quite understand how you are describing this exactly. Is there a different way to put it? I’m always looking for easier ways to understand and then use things, and many times, the very best help comes from other guitarists! Thanks in advance!

Sorry coach, I saw this question the other day but I didn’t have time to address it properly so I put it aside and promptly forgot!
I am not sure what part you don’t understand. But maybe this video by Caitlin Caggiano will shed some light at least on the last thing I said: “Major pentatonic scales follow the CAGED shapes up the fretboard”.
