Can’t get better…and then it does.
I have been playing around with “Friend Of The Devil” since Trey Hensley melted my face off with his and Rob Ickes rendition at the Acoustic Life Fest (first one at the Rialto). I then got up and performed it the next day in what was a dissapointing performance (but only when I compared it to the night before). Taken on face it was a smashing success. There is the back story…..Ever since then I play it regularly, exploring all the nooks and crannies. I have never been satisfied with how I play the opening riff bass line. I have had extensive discussions with other players and everyone seems to do it a little differently. Today the whole ball of wax, the whole kit and kaboodle, the whole enchilada, fell into perfect place. The relation ship of Bb,B, and C in the song dropped into my brain like the first time I tried my shoes or balanced on a two wheeler. I had been hearing this sound in my head for years (tiny slurs), unable to reproduce it just carrying on and then BOOOOMMM!! noodling for my 20 thousandth hour it just happened. I was so shocked I almost feel off my seat…..today I am so pumped, relieved, excited to have this little round peg finally slide into the perfect round hole. The dopamine is flowing big time. Trey, Rob…lets play!
