  • D Minor for Dummies?

Posted by ATTILA on October 27, 2022 at 6:38 am

Just finished 30 days and into my first week of challenges and here I’m dealing with a curious alternate tuning and chord shapes. How does this help me play mainstream songs? What am I missing here? Intermediate player.

It probably doesn’t help you with main stream songs, but it is fun. I’ve used it to play A Soalin’ in prep for Christmas. Tony throws these alternate tunings in a few times a year and they are appreciated and fun after you’ve been in a while. These tunings also reenforce concepts you pick up in Fretboard Wizard. There is also a whole skills course on Alt Tunings. Don’t let it worry you. Your first week just happens to be a anomaly for a Challenge starting place.

Thanks for the support and wise comments. Just glad this isn’t a weekly routine! Cheers

Open tunings are a relatively new thing for me, too. After concentrating on learning songs for my first 3+years of guitar, I’ve recently gotten curious about exploring different aspects of this fascinating instrument – such as blues and slide guitar, which make extensive use of open tunings, it appears. As albertd says, though, this week is only the second time in my 5 months of TAC where Tony has used an open tuning theme. Hang in there!

Hi @ATTILA , welcome to TAC. I hope you have a fun journey here. As for finding fun with these Daily Challenges in open Dm tuning, I feel your hurt. But if you care to go back to today’s challenge and read the comments, I think you’ll find something fun (at least it was to me) in a link provided by @peter_m . It’s an article from Acoustic Guitar Magazine about blues in open Dm tuning. At the bottom of the article is a tab, and I had fun playing that instead of today’s chord progression. Try it, you may like it (if you still have your guitar tuned to open Dm).

Thanks. Good thought. I’ll check out the article. I guess someone else actually does play in this tuning! That’s refreshing to know. Cheers.

I could not find any recent songs in Dminor, but the link has a list of some old ones. A couple have tablature. i want to check out the Nick Drake one.
