  • Ear waking up

So academically I know that by its nature guitar (and nearly all fretted instruments) are always ALMOST in tune, because they use equal temperament. I was noodling on a run in G this morning, and either the new guitar which is more articulate made it clear, or my musical ear is waking up because the discordination between a G played on the 6th string, and the open 3rd string kept bothering me. So I changed the tuning slightly by tuning the 3rd string just a wee bit sharp, and now (to risk an ugly rhyme) the run sounds like it is played on a harp.

Kind of fun to monkey with key specific intonation. I will have to play with it more when I hear it.

Yeah, seems like the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings have to be slightly out of it to sound ok. There is something called sweetened tuning that James Taylor uses. Look for it on Youtube. I can’t get a my tuner app to measure that accurately.

Great, Alfred! I would suggest that you record your “noodling” (but I suspect you already have). I get the most from hearing what I have done. Then I can judge if I am accurately assessing what I think I heard…

Hope your week is going well.

I actually didn’t record it. Was working on new to me skills with a familiar run, still a bit rough but coming along. Gotta get those embellishments going!
