I have a difficult time keeping my fingers close to the fretboard, ESPECIALLY when my pinky gets involved. Also – my pinky tends to lock to my ring finger or lay on its side curving the tip of the pinky towards my ring finger. I’m doing the 30 days to play program, but I have been strumming chords for years.

    Any Ideas?

Welcome to the TAC community @Mrjoshc ! I understand your frustration with fingers just not cooperating the way we want. Many fingers share the same tendons with other fingers, and they often move together. Through exercises that do individual finger strength and finger placements on different frets, you’ll eventually build strength and train your fingers to act more independently. This will also help with keeping the hand closer to the fretboard.

With regard to the 30 days to play, just keep doing your best, but try and keep the flow moving forward. Do the lessons for a minimum of 10 minutes and mark complete. You can still work on the lesson, but don’t get stuck on it. Move to the next lesson, even if you haven’t “perfected” the lesson. TAC teaches progress over perfection. You will continue to get better by following this practice. Everything builds skills and helps you progress and get better. You can always revisit a lesson later.

As a side note, if you really want to revisit something again, hit the heart to save a lesson to favorites. Your favorites show up under your profile.

There are some drills that can help with that. I do something called the “spider” drill. Start at the low E string, index finger on the 5th fret, middle on the 6th fret, ring on the 7th fret, and pinky on the 8th fret. Hold all the fingers down on the strings. Then take the index finger and move it down to the A string, 5th fret. keeping the index finger on the string, move each finger down separately to the lower string. Do this all the way to the high E, and then back up to the top. You can continue to move up the fretboard and back if you want more exercise. This has really helped me build finger coordination, and is a good warm up drill as well.

I am new to TAC. I have been playing guitar for years. But mostly finger picking and strumming to stationary chords rather than moving my fretting fingers on the fretboard. So glad I am not the only one who has this problem. I have a super flying pinkie. Thanks for the drill SKyman911. I will try that.
