Gotta celebrate them when they happen
Two small wins for me. Today is day 90 in a row of playing guitar for 10 minutes or more (often much more)! I’m pretty pumped about that! My other small win is with chord transitions. I’ve been really having problem switching between chords I know well. I did a little digging on YouTube and rewatched Tony’s video on the subject. One of the most helpful bits of advice I found was around visualization. The main gist was, if you are crossing a river via rocks, you don’t just jump off the first rock and hope to find one on the way down. You chart your path visually.
So I gave it a try. I slowed waaaay down, I didn’t even bother with strumming (as the guys suggested). I just visualized where my fingers were going to go, and then moved them. I worked on that with just two chords for a while and then I put a timer on for a minute and counted the number of changes I could get. Before doing the visualization, the best I could ever hit was mid 20s (with clean chord changes). After doing the visualization I consistently hit 30s on my hardest change and 40s on my more comfortable changes. That proof of improvement felt amazing! So going forward this will be part of my practice routine.
If you are having trouble with chord transitions, give it a try. Go slow, don’t strum, just visualize where your fingers are going to go and then slowly move them there. Then close your eyes and feel what that chord feels like (I found that helpful too). Then visualize where your fingers will go and move back to the first chord. Rinse, repeat. Speed up as it feels right.
