  • Hammer On Issue

Posted by MMMURRAY on October 2, 2023 at 2:04 pm

So this is my first day of the Daily Challenge. I’ve done the 30 Day and 5 Day Challenges and can do most of the exercises, however slowly. But when I try to do the hammer on going from my middle to the ring finger there is no note to be had. Absolutely nothing. Could this be my problem or the guitar? I’m totally befuddled.

@MMMURRAY It’s nobody or no things fault whatsoever. Hammer ons take practice. You build up finger strength as you keep trying (and do the Technique courses focused on building finger strength). Make sure you have enough arch in your wrist so that the hammer on finger comes straightdown on the string. If you can actually fret the string and hear a note, then there is nothing wrong with the guitar. It is simply ensuring proper technique and building up strength to come straight down with enough force (not hurricane force, just a solid strike with the finger), and it will eventually ring out. It simply takes time and practice. Hang in there!

You must take Positive Pills when you wake up. Thanks again for the encouragement.

I’m about 3.5 months ahead of you and I struggled with hammer-ons as well.

I ended up coming up with my own practice routine where I just hit any open string with my index finger. I repeated until I was able to make a sound. Then repeated with my other fingers.

This taught me how much force was needed and the correct finger position.

I still struggle with it depending upon the chord shape my fingers are holding, but it’s getting better every week.

Moose, Thanks for the response. I think part of my problem is that I’m using an older guitar which I just found out is a Fender Chinese knockoff. I keep trying to make some progress but when I see Tony effortlessly hitting a string and it sounds nothing like my guitar I just want to give up. So I ordered a Zager 50CE mainly because Other people tell me it’s easier to play. Waiting almost a month for it to get here due to supply problems according to them. Another frustration. Thinking about trying other skill lessons until the guitar arrives. I want to be positive and hopefully this will help. Thanks again.

@MMMURRAY, I completely agree with @Loraine , it just takes time and practice. I have been playing for quite a while and struggle sometimes. You will get this skill, trust the process.

Keep at it I promise that it will get easier. I have only been at it for a month and love it. I am getting my Epiphone either tonight or tomorrow. I know being excited about a new guitar. Wish you could have gotten with the GC they have a massive sale going on right now. I managed to get the Hummingbird, with strap, and an A-frame guitar stand for 365$ for a guitar that normally sells for 479$ by itself.
