1.) How many days per week do you play?

I try to practice everyday. Oh, yes, I miss now and then but my goal has been to log on to the TAC website every day, mess with that days challenge, go to some practice items like chord transition or flat picking, and finish with playing and singing a few songs. Learning how to play guitar was a pandemic project for me. It came out of a long time desire to play at a campfire.

2.) What time of day do you play?

I am a retired guy but I have a pretty solid routine. Every day I stop what I’m doing at 4:05 pm; I have an alarm set on my iWatch 😉. This is usually a pretty quiet time around our house. I get out my guitar and the iPad and log in.

    3.) Where do you play?

I play and practice in our great room. When we built this house a couple of years ago we created a room with two walls of glass to take advantage of our view of Newman Lake and Mt Spokane to the north. I usually take the couch so ROBBEE the yellow lab can curl up there with me.

4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).

I do not have a musical background so this whole process has been a new challenge for me. But, my wife of 53 years, the lovely Ms Pam, has been an inspiration. She did have that background as a kid learning piano and has encouraged me. My other inspiration has been two young guys that I worked with at youth camps every summer. After my career got going my wife and I have volunteered a week every summer at our denomination’s youth camp. Over the years I developed a fun relationship with two people in particular that always lead our evening campfire programs. Both are great guitarists. I am an enthusiastic singer but this summer I’d like to lead one song playing the guitar.

    – My guitar routine has helped me learn the basics. My strumming and chord transitions have become more precise and a lot faster. My fingerpicking is terrible but I keep plugging away at it. I have started using the flat pick method with more satisfaction.

    – My guitar routine has given me a sense of purpose. I’m driven to learn but it so satisfying to sit and pick and occasionally pet the dog.

    – My guitar routine is just a fun place to be. I am usually alone but I have a lot of fun trying to strum out a tune. I do a pretty good rendition of the Animal’s “House of the rising sun” and Colter Wall’s “Calgary Stampede”.

5.) What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?

While gathering up the guitar, the iPad and the dog, I pour myself a nice cold microbrew in a frosty mug.
