How I TAC
1.) How many days per week do you play?
I’ve also committed to 5 days per week (Monday through Friday), but usually I also pick up my guitar Saturday & Sunday at least for a few minutes.
2.) What time of day do you play?
Ah, this was kind of a lightbulb moment for me, ‘cuz I used to think it really didn’t matter what time I practiced. I’m recently retired (and even more recently joined TAC), so I kinda thought “I’ve got all day, so ….” But of course, as the day went on, my commitment waned, so even when I did practice, it really didn’t receive my best effort. So I’ve committed to practice each day by 11 am. And under no circumstances do I get lunch if I haven’t played my guitar! 😏
3.) Where do you play?
I play in my music room (my guitar has to share space with my piano, which I’m also trying to learn).
4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Well, (a) absolutely no structure; (b) no (or little) learning of new things; and (c) frankly, minimal enjoyment. There’s 3 big things, all sort of related. I’ve had my guitar for about 40 years, but for most of the past 30 years it’s sat in its case. Mostly what I knew how to play, I’d learned in my teens and early 20s. So when I did go to play, I didn’t do it often enough or consistently enough to branch out (not to mention callouses!) and just reverted to what I knew or could remember from years before.
So, playing every day kinda helps me overcome my inertia, forces me to try new things that I would never do on my own, which then builds on itself, so now I can do some things that I couldn’t do before . . . which feels pretty great.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
Right behind me in this pic, on my piano, is a pic of my almost-3 y.o. granddaughter, who is a part of my motivation for learning, so that when she’s ready she’ll have someone to teach her!
