  • How I TAC – Maydog

1.) How many days per week do you play?

I play 7 days a week, and usually at least twice a day.

2.) What time of day do you play?

Right after breakfast, I play for an hour or two. During this session, I typically work on dexterity and accuracy drills or work on a song or solo that I’m working on.

After lunch, I usually play for another hour similar to my morning session.

After dinner, I play for another couple of hours. This is when I TAC. I go to the daily challenge and open the tab. I use the tab sheet until I have the challenge committed to memory. Then I go to the practice video and play along with the video for anywhere from 10-45 minutes. I keep increasing the speed until I can’t progress any further. Once I hit the “Mark Complete” button, I’m usually up until 1:00am playing, practicing, or learning. I play along to YouTube backing tracks as well most days, and I have a couple other guitar channels that I learn from.

    3.) Where do you play?

We have a guest suite/media room/music room upstairs. All the bedrooms are downstairs, which is how I can play until the wee hours without waking my wife or mom.

4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you?

Before having a guitar routine, I was not improving much at all, and I was not really enjoying playing all that much. Having a routine has helped in the following ways: 1) I have a prescribed plan that I follow (TAC), so my guitar time is much more productive. 2) Because of the routine, I have developed confidence because I have seen improvement by following the routine. 3) Even though I practice more, I am more relaxed and patient with myself. Going to the gym and having a guitar routine are similar. The first several times, you’ll be sore, tired, and not very good at it. But if you keep at it, you notice within 3-4 weeks that you’ve made some real progress. That’s what keeps you coming back.

5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine? I have 3 regular items that are essential: Coffee for my morning and afternoon sessions, and Atomic Fireball candy in the afternoon and evening. Having my dog Mo around is also a bonus, but he isn’t too fond of my playing. That’s why he only gets dry food.

Nice @Maydog . I now see how you make progress like you have. Are you sure Mo isn’t just objecting to the dry food?

Maybe I could entice him to pretend that he likes my guitar playing! 🍗🥓🥩
