Is it me?
Posted by Danny75 on December 2, 2021 at 5:25 pmHello all. I just started Tony’ Acoustic Challenge. 5 minutes into it and I am feeling lost already. Granted I’ve never picked up a guitar before. But the first daily challenge is talking about aspects of guitar that I am not at all familiar with, such as which stings are which. Is this information that isn’t taught during the course that I am assumed to know already?
Thank you all for whatever help you can give.

Hi @Danny75 check out the 30 days to play course in the Skill Courses. The first lesson is what the strings are and how to tune them. 30 days to play is a great place to start. Click on the calendar icon (6th one down) and the primer is the first set of lessons or I put the link below; click some of those icons on the left and look around. Also if you only see icons on the left click on the three lines at the top and it will expand to include descriptions.

Welcome! No, it’s not you. Start by hitting the little three line menu opener upper at upper left, and go to Skill Courses. That will take you here — https://tonypolecastro.com/courses/ — and from there, there are two great places to start. First is 30 Days to Play, which can take a lot longer than 30 days (it took me about 75 days), so stay positive and focus on your wins. That one is here — https://tonypolecastro.com/courses/30-days-to-play/.
The other one has to do with stretching and keeping your body in good form. A lot of people think they’re going to pick up the guitar and start playing songs right away (looks at self) but the fact is you’re going to use a lot of muscles and joints in ways they’ve never been used before. It’s kind of like going to the bike shop and getting a sweet new mountain bike, then expecting to go on a 12 mile cruise along the fire roads. A person has to build up to that kind of thing, so start with this daily stretching routine to help yourself get warm and limber — https://tonypolecastro.com/courses/guitar-players-daily-stretch-guide/.
Most of all, enjoy the journey!

Hi @Danny75 I know how you feel. I’m relatively new here. It was recommended to me to start with the “30 Days to Play” course. After that, consider “Your Next Six Chords.” That’s my plan. I don’t expect to be ready for the “Daily” challenges for a while. I’m starting out slow. Everyone’s different. YMMV 🙂

Danny 75–
First off- Welcome to the TAC community!- (and it is just that!), and also the TAC Forum!
In my opinion, you have made your FIRST great choice– to go into our Forum and ask a few questions. Remember that if you DON’T have a ton of questions, you’re doin’ it wrong. No question is too small here- there are very knowledgeable advisors in here, and everyone is here to help. Our Forum is a GREAT asset to your- (and all of our)- learning……… no matter what level we’re at. You’ll see!
I agree with anyone who says, “take it easy on yourself when you first start off”.
A world-famous, TAC, Circle-of-Honor member once said, “Expectation is Where Fun goes to Die”.
Remember those words………. Be cool, take it easy– and HAVE FUN playing- (the skill and ability will come!).
Goin’ back under my rock now—

Welcome to the TAC community @Danny75 ! I had never played guitar before either before starting, and I actually called strings ‘keys’ – lol. Great advice to begin with the 30 days to play and then the next 6 chords after that. I didn’t begin the daily challenges until after I completed these. Be kind and patient with yourself, and always remember to have fun (you can’t help but have fun in the 30 days to play course).
