Jam Session Debut (well, sort of!)
I finally conquered my fears enough to attend my first jam session, and came away inspired to work harder at becoming a better player. I said “sort of” because I didn’t actually take any turns at leading, and in fact barely did much playing. All of the other participants were far above my level of musical ability, and were playing mostly music I wasn’t very familiar with – Celtic traditional and old folk tunes. I love that style of music and enjoyed just listening and watching them play, but know too little about it to even try to play along. But it was still a big win for me because I managed to keep a good attitude (not always my typical behaviour, alas) and chose to draw inspiration rather than discouragement. Maybe my guitar absorbed some of that energy, too! After watching Tony’s course on jam sessions, I was encouraged enough to attend one, but I’m hoping I can find a group with at least one or two others nearer to my level. I came away convinced that jamming with others is an essential step to progressing further on my guitar journey.
