This evening I blanked on where to put my fingers for an F chord.
I haven’t done much with bar chords yet so don’t have the shapes memorized
Then I thought to myself :
“Self, you know a major chord is the I, III, V – so that would be F, A, C”
Then I looked at each string and Found the first F, A, or C on the string
(E1=F, A3=C, D3=F, G2=A, B1=C, E1=F)
Suddenly the bar chord had meaning. It wasn’t just a shape or putting my fingers where I’m told.
I was able to come up with the shape because I knew the “why”
I need a little more time to ingrain the patters – but I feel like I now get things like sus2/sus4, add7/add9, etc. chords.
Having those pieces fit together made it all go from magic incantations and memorization of chord books – to a few simple rules and a way to figure it out on the fret board.
