  • Muted / Dead Strum?!!?

Posted by TheRealRobbo on April 30, 2023 at 1:07 pm

I got so lost in the rhythm challenges this week. I do not understand how to make the muted or dead strumming sounds. I can’t see what Tony’s hands are doing differently from mine but I cannot make those sounds. I just came off 30 days to play, so I’m totally new to guitar. Can anyone point me to an explainer for those techniques?

One is basically strumming the strings with the fretting hand laid across them to keep them from resonating. I can do this but the rhythm part is always a challenge and muscle memory work out for me so I get it. It’s not technically hard, but my old brain takes some time to carve those new neurological paths. I hope that helps.

Welcome to TAC @TheRealRobbo ! As @alfred_d pointed out, muting is lightly laying your hand or finger(s) across the E strings without adding pressure. The rhythm just comes with lots of practice. Sometimes mine sounds good, and other times it simply sounds like plllfffff (doo doo). 🙂 Hang in there, and you’ll be surprised how 8 months goes by and the lessons rotates back around, and all of a sudden something that gave us problems beforehand is now doable.
