One year older, but new addition to the guitarsenal
Posted by GerryB56 on October 7, 2022 at 2:30 pmOkay, so I’m officially in the Geezer years now (66) – but only 4 years into my guitar journey so hopefully have at least a couple more decades ahead, because I’m gonna’ need them if I want to achieve some level of competence with these stringed things😆 Brought home my latest toy today – a Gretsch Boxcar resonator, with which I plan to learn some blues and slide guitar style tunes. I’ve only just begun to experiment with open tunings, and it’s pretty darn exciting to discover this whole new element of guitar geekdom! Calling this a big small win!

@John_Hall , i love your guitar. I am just wondering…. is it heavy?
-
Yes, it’s all steel so much heavier than a traditional acoustic but produces a sound all its own. Look up Mule Resonators, they build wonderful guitars.

@John_Hall : yes, I have looked at the Mules and they are a little on the high side for me. The reviews on them are all great. I might look on-line and keep an eye out for a used one.

That’s a beauty! I debated whether to go for a metal resonator but settled on the Boxcar for starters.

Yeah, big small win indeed, @GerryB56 . That’s a great resonator and I’m sure you will have loads of fun. Blues and slide just don’t sound the same on other guitars. This resonator will really bring out the flavor of these styles of guitar music. And you can play “normal” music on the resonator also and it gives it a very unique sound. In my opinion, resonators are particularly good at play lead guitar solos.
I hope you have years of enjoyment. Congrats.

Thanks, Mike! I do really love the unique sound of a resonator guitar, it’s inspired me to tackle playing some blues, which I’ve never really explored before. And maybe learning some slide technique will push me to get more use out of my Les Paul.

I am really happy for you @GerryB56 that this reso is working out for you. There are a lot of types of guitars and styles of guitar playing. I think one of the most important parts of our guitar journey is finding out where in the big world of guitar we want to be. I look forward to hearing some of your reso playing. Maybe you can join one of our VOMs and play or post a recording here on TAC.

@GerryB56, i have to say you got a beauty of a guitar there. I know Tony just had a show on resonators. I’m going to have to pull it up and take a look at it. A resonator would top off my collection 😉
Thanks for posting a picture of it.-
I love it so far, most of the reviews I read/watched gave it high marks for good value. You no doubt have a much wider selection in the US – even at Cosmo Music in Toronto, which is a guitar superstore, they only had one wood resonator on the floor and it was a square neck. I got the bug to buy and try a resonator by watching Justin Johnson on YouTube. Have signed up for some online blues and slide lessons to supplement my TAC daily practice.

Thanks, stevieblues! I’m pretty taken with the look of these guitars, makes me wonder why they’re not more popular. Maybe people think they’re only for blues or bluegrass music, but they sound so cool with any type of playing, it seems to me.
