  • Pick Vs Fingers

Well…..I’m in the second week of the 30 day challenge and I do, already, feel things are getting easier and I’m also building up my speed. My worst issue is the alternate picking. It slows me down. I know that is normal and it takes time to build up the speed and coordination. A few years back, I was taking private lessons and the instructor at that time told me that I didn’t have to use a pick and just use my fingers. I wish now that I had built up the pick habit back then so I wouldn’t have gotten in the habit of using my fingers.

You can do both; and it is extremely helpful to do both in the long run. Some of the Skill Courses are for finger picking; some are for flat picking. Some of the daily challenges use finger picking; some flat picking. Over time you will get better at both. I have found they both have their plus side; and certain songs work better with one or the other style. “I just did Simple Man”. Of course it is electric, and I believe Lynyrd Skynyrd used picks. In this case, since I was doing it solo on an acoustic, I switched from a pick to finger style, and found that worked best for me. It’s fun to experiment.
