  • Picking the right string immediately

Posted by Mark F on May 4, 2021 at 10:00 pm

I just started the course. I think what would really help me learn is the ability to just go to the correct string immediately instead of counting the stings while saying Eddy ate dynamite good bye eddy in my head. Ideally it would be good to have a flash card type system where say a “D” would flash up and you would have to immediately hit that string, but its connected to a digital tuner which would recognize if you hit the right string and beep when you made an error. Its kind of like learning to type using a typing program that gives you feedback on your errors for each letter.

    Is there such a thing?

You should invent and sell it!

guitartricks website has a “fretboard trainer” (https://www.guitartricks.com/fretboardtrainer.php), I think it’s accessible also to non-members. It goes beyond just the empty strings, but you have to know the string to be able to figure out the note.

Hi @[email protected] , check out the Friday Lessons, they have just what you are looking for. The video has accompanying chords that “flash” on the changes. If you just focus on the note indicated you will have what you are looking for. You will have at least two opportunities of note choice for most of the chords. Your ears will tell you if you hit the right note once you have identified the location of the notes. This is off label use of the exercise but it works. Slow the exercise down to a speed where you are can eliminate tension. There are usually 3 chords presented in a key but there are weeks where it addresses all the chords in the key. If you did this every week you would find 3 notes and their octaves per week to memorize. No extra effort other than refocusing the intention of the exercise. Don’t forget to do the chords too. By doing both of these things you will learn the root note positions relative to the chord shapes and that is a huge advantage. : )
