  • Picks or Plectrums if you prefer

Okay did an experiment, if you ask someone what pick use you will get a thousand different answers. The first thing I was told was get medium picks, so I did, got a 12 pack of Fender picks. They aren’t bad but they weren’t working for me. Then I was told no, you want really thin ones that you can basically roll up in your fingers. So I bought some Dunlop 0.38mm Vinyl picks, they are Okay but they were nothing to write home about. They were way better than the Fender mediums but too me the clacked on each string. Maybe somebody listening wouldn’t hear it but to me all I could think about was when I would take a clothes pen and a baseball card and put it on my bike spokes.

So back to the music store and I bought some more Dunlop vinyls, this time I got the 0.48 mm, 0.60mm, and the 0.73mm. It was interesting to try them out and I settled on the 0.60mm for now. Good on the down stroke without the clack and good on the up stroke unlike the medium which would hit the high the E and stop. Now I can do the down-down-up-up-down-up strum until I get confused and loose my place. Too bad I still can’t change between chords in less than 30 seconds, it might sound okay, still it’s a win

Congrats on finding out what works for you at this point in your journey. Welcome to TAC. I have been in it a little over 2 years. It has helped me a lot.
It is probably better to use lighter picks when starting out because of
the give. It took time before I was able to use the medium and some
heavy picks well, when at first I couldn’t. Looking at, trying, and
getting new equipment as you journey along (including picks), is part of
    the fun.

It’s such an individual preference. I have settled on two I like the most. The Dava Guitar Picks Control Nylon (about a .8 or .9, giving sturdiness with a little give); or the DuraGrip 1mm; stiffer than the Dava, but not too heavy. For me, the comfort and feel I like; but also a great tone.
It’s fun to experiment with different picks; and amazed me the difference in feel and sound as I have played around with them. Good luck in your venture!
