Pinky Finger & the Low E String
Posted by trevor_returns_to_learning on March 10, 2023 at 12:19 pmHey TAC Family!
I recently posted about starting the Soloing section of the 30 Days to Play course. What a great experience! Before coming to TAC, I had really been just a strummer.
I find it challenging to reach the Low E with my pinky. I’m sure this is a common problem.
I’m curious if anyone has some tips on improving this skill?
Thank you!

You are in fantastic luck @trevor_finally_learns_guitar , all next week is dedicated to strengthening your pinky. It is a 5 day pinky challenge. That is the quick easy answer. The long less satisfying answer is over time your hand, wrist, fingers (including the pinky) will get stronger and more flexible allowing you to play more relaxed with varied hand positions that put your fingers into their most advantageous positions to achieve the sound you desire. The only way to accomplish that is by playing every day.

Hey jumpinjeff!
I suspected this was a matter of practice and repetition. Thanks for the heads up on the 5 day course though! I’ll check those out and flag them for future practice sessions.
Cheers!

When you say you’re trying to reach the low E with your pinky what is it that you’re trying to do? Are you holding a certain chord?

Hey That_Guy!
Not really for chords, more stretching for individual notes. However, I’m sure stretching for a chord requiring the same finger placement would present the same challenge.

It seems like overtime I am now able to reach things that used to be impossible for me. And if it feels like your hand just doesn’t work that way, don’t fear that you can’t do it and that’s it the road ends here. Thats not it. It will slowly and pretty much unnoticeably get better over time. It’s just going to take awhile.
About a year ago I went through all of the skill challenges courses and could only physically complete about half of them. I went through them again this year and was able to do almost all of the ones that I couldn’t do last time. Still have a few challenges left that I just can’t contort my hand into such away but maybe next year….
I once met a time traveler who told me “ don’t worry the future is gonna be great”

That’s exactly how I feel at the moment 😂 Like my hand just wont bend that way!
It’s great to hear, that with consitent practice, I can expect the needle to slowly move in the direction I’m aiming for.
Thanks for your thoughts! I appreciate it!
