  • Playing at retirement home

I played 8 songs for my mother in law in her room. and then played, later in the week, six songs in front of many of the residents at the ice cream social they have every Friday. This has been one of my goals since picking up the guitar after a 40 year lay off. We will see if they invite me back….

Now there are a few other open mic opportunities in Ketchikan that I need to add to my win list, but may not happen until covid calms down.

Awesome Dirk! That was a great, achievable goal you set for yourself – I’m 100% sure you have many more and will hit them out of the ballpark too. Well done.

@Dirk_R I’m sure the residents loved having you perform, and knowing how well you play, I’m sure you sounded great. Be very proud of yourself!

I am referred to as “a singing nurse” when volunteering to care for hospice patients at an end-of-life comfort home. It is amazing how once it was Frank Sinatra or Perry Como songs but now, they want to hear those from the 60’s and 70’s like Led Zeppelin! (That would be me too.)

Dirk, I think you will agree playing for such individuals provides joy for them but for you too. Good luck to you with your future open mics.

That is a great thing Dirk, I have been thinking this as well, I once read some poetry for people in a retirement home my mom was in and they seemed to really enjoy it keep up the good work!

I play with another guitarist at a senior center once a month though covid has slowed the requests lately. The audience loves fun songs and ballads. We try to stay away from sad songs. Yodeling is a real hit (my fellow musician does this). I brought about 20 Christmas songs that were enjoyed by most of the gang. What you do is so meaningful, Dirk.

Thanks, CamCan, Can you pass on some of the more favorite songs they enjoy?

Great win and experience. I know you are excited to be a conduit of joy with your guitar and it is good outreach and blessing to others.
