Power of Storytelling
After watching a recent Acoustic Tuesday show (5 Mantras for 2022), I experienced an unexpected “aha moment”!
To back up a bit, I ushered in this year with an unexpected “oh no moment“.
While doing some heavy lifting in my yard on January 1, I suffered a small heart attack (despite a healthy lifestyle, I brought family history and undiagnosed diabetes to that event, leading to 2 stents).
As part of my recovery, I decided that guitar would play a key role.
My wife, Ria, suggested that form of daily medicine – primarily because it means I have to focus entirely on the task at hand (well, both hands to be precise), putting aside usual stressors and worries. It’s also a skill that I’ve always wanted to improve. In other words, accomplishment is another core health benefit.
The TAC way certainly fits with those objectives! Now, fast forward back to the “aha moment” with the show.
It occurred to me that Tony’s approach is all about immersing yourself in guitar culture. Yes, learning, playing and progressing (while having fun) are building blocks – but taking a truly deep dive into the waters of guitar geekdom is essential.
This realization may only be a “uh yah moment” for you. Not for me. Sure, I put in a toe or three on occasion. Maybe even splashed around for a time. However, the light bulb went on now. I need to really commit to guitar therapy.
So, I started by devoting my Instagram followings to all-things-guitar. Then I altered my home office to include, in effect, a guitar studio. Complete with humidifier, hygrometer and humidification packs for frigid Canadian winters, plus new stands/mounts and a stool.
I also did some overdue maintenance on my guitars – then splurged on a new one (gorgeous Taylor shown in attached photos with my Godin and Seagull highlighted by Tony on a Guitarsenal episode in December 2021)!
Next on the list: recommit to TAC and all that it offers, including online Forums.
Which led me to this post. As you can tell, I believe in storytelling (not always long tales like this!). And the TAC community offers so many insightful, meaningful and positive examples.
It’s a remarkable group. A willingness to share, support and be candid, regardless which part of a guitar journey the author or responder is travelling along.
I urge you to check out the PROFILES. Not just what may be set out in this Forum. What members have thoughtfully written about their own “why”. Amazing stuff.
I wish to thank everyone who takes the time and energy to convey their comments and insights here. Such a healthy way to help others, perhaps beyond the guitar. Life is, after all, about relationships. One small splash of kindness can often make a much bigger ripple than we could know or imagine.
In my case, as I keep swimming further into the guitar pool, TAC and its members are certainly doing my heart a lot of good.
