  • Strumming 2 Strings

Posted by PhoenixRising on February 3, 2024 at 3:30 pm

I just completed the 5 Day Routine Guitar Challenge! There was definitely some learning curves, and the need to give myself a peptalk and being persistent.

I know they say there are no stupid questions. This one seems a bit silly, but I figure if I’m wondering, there may be other people who have the same question. During a couple of the lessons involving chord, progressions and improvisation, we are moving up the fret bar, and strumming two strings… Down and up. I can do that, however, I notice that sometimes it sounds. like two separate notes with the first string being more predominant. When I listen to Tony, it sounds more blended. I’m looking for some feedback on technique. It seems fairly simple, but I’m just wondering if I need to strum more lightly for the blended sound? Does that makes sense?

I am adding to my post. It seems like when I strum a little more softly, the two strings blend together better than if I strum more firmly. Perhaps it has something to do with pick position?

I’m adding more to my post. Again, this is so simple.

Specifically, it is when I am fretting the A string and strumming it along with the open E String with eighth notes. I can play both strings, but sometimes it seems like it’s a little heavy on the E String… Almost like it is stuck.

lol You are really thinking this through. What I’ve noticed, and I hope this is addressing your question/answer is that if I go SLOWLY I hear more separate strings. But I notice that Tony doesn’t go SLOWLY, he strums the multiple strings as a unit (“quickly”), going through it in one “brush” motion. I’ve noticed what you’ve noticed, I think, and then I remind myself to complete the “ocean wave” completely through and not “pick” each string as I’m passing through the group of strings (chords). Hope that helps!

I find using the pick not easy. I definitely get caught on certain strings and definitely sounds quite twangy. Hoping with practice this might change. Also find the pick moves in my hand , but again sticking with it for now

Go to the skills course under techniques and pick the flat picking course. Tony will explain how to hold the pick and give picking technique instructions. It’s very helpful. Remember to let the pick do the work and relax your hand, wrist ,elbow and shoulder. Like everything else in takes time to develop. Good luck, Kim
