  • TACiversary IV- Riding Drag with the Herd

4th TACiversary- Lesson- Don’t drink downstream from the herd.

    1. Where were you with guitar when you joined? Since this is my 4TACiversary, I am modifying this response to where were you with guitar at your 3 TACivesary.

I was starting to improvise and had a handful of back pocket finger picking and flat-picking songs. Scale patterns were becoming familiar under my fingers, and I was starting to improvise and add licks and runs. I had completed Fretboard Wizard original version. I was experimenting with alternate tunings. I was having a boat load of fun.

    2. What are three things you can do now that you couldn’t do before my 3 TACiversary?

    1) I am understanding a little about amplifying and recording my acoustic guitar. I purchased a book from Acoustic Guitar on amplifying gear, etc. I have purchased a new Ovation and added a pickup to my Louden guitar, acquired and hooked up a Focusrite Scarlett 414 Audio Interface, a Coolmusic BP80 Acoustic Guitar Amplifier-Portage Blueooth Speaker 100W, and Realm DAW and have set up a mini recording studio. I kind of understand what some of that stuff is and am awkward but working toward making it familiar.

    2) I completed another Guitar Theory Volume One and Two course, “No Bull Music Theory for Guitarist” by James Shipway and completed the new Fretboard Wizard II with Tony so I understand better the why behind the how. I really encourage anyone on their guitar journey to get a little theory. It is so much fun.

    3) I can fingerpick a new arrangement of “It is Well with my Soul.”. It has taken a good while to make this piece my own, but I really appreciate the beauty and solace of the piece and the work has been well worth it.

    4) I did play an open Mic and performed a piece to my wife for our wedding anniversary and added 12 new cover songs to my playlist which was a goal from last year including a little dream related medley that I particularly like. I also posted a few songs to TAC as a quarterly goal.

    3. Complete this statement: It would be amazing if this time next year if I could

    1) Play another performance live.

    2) Added formal Travis picking and Woody Guthrie Talking Blues picking styles to my toolkit.

    3) Conquered the Mississippi Timing exercise.

    4) Become comfortable and proficient at recording songs.

    5) Learned to flat pick Whiskey Before Breakfast.

    6) Recorded and posted some of the above.

Post Script… I AM having a ship load of fun.

@albert_d Congratulations on your 4th TACiversary!!! I love reading about everyone’s accomplishments year to year, and it gives me a little boost to continue to improve, because I want to learn what so many others have learned. Sounds to me as if you’re off to a great start to the new year.
