The Beauty of a Metronome
I have rediscovered the beauty of using a metronome. I have a bad habit of not slowing down enough when learning/practicing a new piece. Instead of improving, I think I was embedding the mistakes into my muscle memory.
I am now setting my metronome to the appropriate speed of the most difficult passage. That encourages me to practice that passage over and over until I get it right, and prevents me from rushing over it and repeating the same mistakes.
The other advantage is that I can track my improvement based on the metronome speed. So today’s Backward Roll was a breezy 135bpm compared to Monday’s 116 – a small, but definite win for me!
