  • The Promise – My Newest Original Song

Posted by N-lightMike on July 1, 2022 at 9:54 pm

This song, The Promise, is based on the promise God gave Abraham at Genesis 22:18.

I started this song a while ago. I have been mulling it over for a week or 2. Then, a few days ago, I got the rhythm and melody for the chorus and began in earnest writing the rest of the song. I had the help of my wife and @Brian_P to critique the lyrics and guide my edits. I had to completely scrap what I had, except the chorus, and start again at one point. The critiques they gave me are largely responsible for what I finally came up with. This song turned out better than what I could have hoped for.

I played it almost all the way through, and then had a problem with the last verse, so I started again and made it through the last verse and last chorus. So I decided to cut the rough patch out and go ahead and post this. I finished this yesterday, and have been rehearsing ever since. I tried recording more times than I bothered to count. But instead of getting frustrated, I was just enjoying playing this song. I hope you enjoy it.

Well done on persisting and also just enjoying the playing and singing. It’s nice to know you have taken your own advice! You also seem to be on a roll with your songwriting. Hard to keep up with all the new material. Great job on this one.

Thank you Darren @Moonhare . I have so many songs that need to get written. I’m picking the ones that want to get out the worst cause I may never be able to write them all.

Very common advice among songwriters is just crank the songs out because 95 out of 100 are going to be junk, then 4 are going to be good, and only 1 out of 100 is going to be great and maybe make you money.

Sorry, it simply doesn’t work that way. Life doesn’t follow statistics. Statistics follows life, but that’s not all that helpful. Every song I write is good because I DON’T just punch them out. Each one takes what it takes. It’s a work of love.

I just read a quote by Steve @Maydog . I was familiar with the principle, but had never heard it worded this way. “Bad things happen fast. Good things happen slowly.”

And I also thank you for the encouragement about taking my own advice. Super important. I was surprised that I wasn’t getting frustrated, but I really enjoy this song. And I am very happy and satisfied with all my small, handful of songs. But this one may be the one I like to play the most… so far. Even over Joy Through the Seasons.

Thank you, @stevieblues . Yes, I did work very hard on this song. But then, I usually do. I put in whatever it takes to make a song become what I had intended.

Thank you for listening and commenting.

Hi @MikeGaurnier and great writing, playing and singing your original song. 😀. Your song writing skills are developing. Your first takes in this song are more developed and integrated than the first few you have shared. It is also great you are collaborating with others in the development of your art. Nicely done and thanks for sharing! 😃

Yes, definitely, @Kitman . I am getting my process down. I’m also getting better at my general musical skills and it’s getting easier to sing the melodies I come up with. Anyway, thanks so much for the insightful comments.
