  • up and down pick motion?

Posted by clsharkegmail-com on April 18, 2024 at 12:09 pm

On the music tabs in the early lessons how do you recognize the up or down strumming pattern? I know Tony says when you count it’s down and when it’s an “and” it’s up, but I can’t seem to recognize this info on the tab music he includes? Any help will be appreciated.

Most TABs don’t contain pick direction. If they do it is indicated by a “Vl for up and a “[“ rotated 90 degrees (so it looks like a roof or hat) for downstrokes.

The real way to tell is to look at the musical staff that Tony has above the tab. Whole and half notes are downstrokes, if there are 8th notes, the note on the beat is a downstroke and the off-beat is an upstroke.

Thanks for the help. I really can’t read music yet, but hopefully can at least note what you indicate to recognize up and down pick action. How much music do you feel you need to be able to read to be decent at learning the guitar? Thanks, Chris

There are many famous guitar players who can’t read musical notation. So I guess the answer to your question is technically none. 🙂

Learning the durations of notes and various things like rests, ties, accents, etc is probably more beneficial than know what each actual note is, but again it’s a bonus and not necessary
