  • Vibrato Help

I like the challenge of this week’s challenge but I’ve never even tried vibrato before… seems weird but that’s the truth of it…

Anyway, I’ve very used to supporting my left hand fingering with the back of the neck using my thumb. If I do that to hold the note on the fret, my had is way too rigid to move like it needs to for most of the vibrato techniques… seems like I have to release by thumb but then the note becomes muted. The other problem I’m having is that the calluses on my fingers tend to slide on the strings too easy which seems to remove any vibrato effect. The bending technique works for me but I’m way too slow with it to make it sound like vibrato… just sounds like a bend. I definitely have more success up the neck but near the nut is not doing anything. So any suggestions? Looking forward to learning something new! Thanks!

I use the bend technique mostly, moving the string up and down slightly. It doesn’t take a lot of movement to produce a bit of vibrato. The other methods don’t seem to work for me at this point in my journey.

Thanks! It’s getting a little better… I guess my hand needs to be a lot less rigid. Part of the overall technique learning. This is one of the “magic” things I think about AC is that seemingly unrelated skills impact many other aspects of your playing and raise the overall level. But mainly I think the daily or near-daily approach, even for 20 mins is huge!
