Hi Everyone, I hope you had a great Christmas. I wanted to start this thread to see what everyone’s guitar goals are for 2025?

I plan to start playing more with others, particularly with a worship team at church.

Yes, I would like to add playing with others to my routine next year as well.

The other thing is to greatly improve my chord transition speed.

For me, trying to find someone to play with. I’m 4 years into my journey, and play by myself 100% of the time. I think I’m almost good enough to start playing simple songs with others, however trying to find them is challenging. None of my friends or family plays.

I used Meetup.com to find a dozen different guitar jam groups in my area. Went to several until I found one I like. Now play with them every Monday night. It has been a great experience. I learn so much every time I go.

Great thread @BrandonK I need to contemplate this one a bit more. I broke my wrist the first week of October, so I haven’t played since then, because I’ve had 2 surgeries on my wrist and hand, and I’m still having a lot of pain. I’ve just begun trying to play a few things, but it’s slow and painful.

My first goalis to get back playing, and build back up a practice routine. I haven’t been able to do finger style much, because of tremors in my hands. I’d like to find a workaround of some sort. I would like to do a live open mic. I’ve done virtual open mics for years, and I belong to 2 in person jam clubs, so I can play to small groups, but I still fear in person open mics. I plan to continue to build and strengthen my go to songs that I think I can perform well in an open mic.

@Skyman911 , I too went on meetup.com and found jam clubs an pd virtual Jo song groups and virtual open mics. You’ll grow as a player by playing with others.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that. How’s your wrist feeling?

Thanks for asking Brandon. The wrist and hand are doing better. I’m definitely gonna have some arthritis and some additional pain that I wasn’t having previously. It’s still going to take a long time to feel comfortable playing. I’ve lost a lot of strength in that arm and fingers, and I still haven’t got full range of motion. It’ll be a little bit longer probably and I’m trying not to overdo it. Like trying to play the guitar now, but I just wanna jump right back into but I’m afraid of causing damage that’ll put me back you know like a month or two and I don’t want that.

I would like to learn to fingerpick better, and learn the fretboard well enough to play a melody line. And play with others. Some of you mentioned Meetup.com; I’ll give that a try.

Wow, I just checked out meetup.com for RI and there is nothing guitar-related less than 50 miles away! I think there are at least a couple of members here who are in RI; wanna get together?

I checked out (meetup.com) groups in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, and found no active groups within range as well.

@BarbaraM, do you want to work on a song together via Zoom?

Interesting that there aren’t any in your area. You could always start one. That is how all of the jams I go to got started, from a single person creating a meetup group and setting up a meeting.

    Goals for 2025

    1) Keep playing daily. The neuroscience will build skills, muscle finger and picking memory if you do consistently.

    2) Keep it simple by sticking to Tony’s lesson progressions and not distracted by youtube lessons

    3) Learn the fretboard.

    4) Have fun!

I’m an absolute beginner so I’m looking at using the challenge keep me accountable to daily practice and combining the skills I learn here with a goal of learning a song (that I’d actually want to play rather than something from a beginner course) every month.

Going to start in person lessons this year. Class on Friday afternoon so I will use TAC each day and then on Friday I will have a list of things to cover and get some pointers on. Last 10 months with just Tony has been awesome, but now it’s time to ratchet it up another notch.

I just started with TAC a couple weeks ago. My goal is to continue to be consistent with the daily challenges and to start posting some benchmark vids. Posting the vids is a stretch for me as I am camera shy. :/ Beyond that, I just want to see consistent improvement through playing daily.

Happy New Year to all! Here’s to health, happiness and improving guitar skills!

I reflected upon your question when I read it a few days ago.

Great question and something many should asked themselves to keep their momentum going. Last year, I started TAC around this time. My first year was a year of “introductions” – chords, strumming patterns, techniques (bending, slides, hammer ons/pull offs, etc.), licks, alternate tuning, and so much more. It was definitely a year of “firsts”.

This year I will expand my initial knowledge to understand the “why’s”. The notes, the melodies, the harmonies, along with the history of how the individual artists developed the song. I will listen more to hear the chords and their transitions. I will concentrate my time on the rhythm guitar portion to get the timing right since the chords are becoming easier to play correctly (except Barres – work in progress). Eventually, my goal is to create my own song; but to do so, I needed the basic understanding of everything.

I’m looking forward to this year as I move from a very basic beginner to a novice. And my one goal is to learn to play “The Weight” by The Band and maybe some of their other songs as well. Again, great question and thank you for posting it!

My guitar goals are to increase my repertoire, work on my soloing skills, and play live somewhere. I’d like to find some like-minded musicians who want to do the same thing or something close to that.

    Great thread! Fun to read.

My own goals are to go back thru the 20-or-so songs I’ve written and posted either in here or JMG, and re-do them— using knowledge I’ve gained in the last couple years. Plus, FINISH the at-least-that-many-again, that are “in progress”). Then, I hope to whittle them down to 20, then 10, then have some kind of a “favorite 5”, or similar, that I can play at VOM’s or maybe even an open mic somewhere- IF somehow I can get up the nerve!).

It’s a tall order for me, but I’m optomistic- (maybe…..).
