  • Wheat Kings – The Tragically Hip

Posted by Braden on March 2, 2026 at 7:07 pm

Hi everyone. Big shout out to all my fellow Canadians, living at home and abroad. The Tragically Hip is one of our most beloved homegrown bands and their frontman/songwriter Gord Downie is a true Canadian hero for many. Sadly he died too young from a terminal brain cancer but not before leading the band on an amazing nation wide good bye tour. This song is about David Milgaard, who at 17 years old, was wrongly convicted of rape and murder and spent 22 years in prison before being acquited when DNA proved he was innocent, something he had professed all along. thanks for tuning in and hope you like it:)

Cool version… a bit more up tempo with a pretty cool groove to it. Love your chord changes …. smooth as butter. The Hip were a constant for me in the 90’s , along with a lot of other 90’s bands. The 80’s seems a bit of a void for me after all the great 60’s and 70’s music I grew up with.

Hey Gary! thanks for having a look and your nice comments. Same for me, ive been listening to the Hip since they first came out in the 80s. They really are one of those ‘soundtrack of our lives’ bands with so many great tunes, many with a distinct Canadian content/vibe. Thanks again man…I see youre a new TAC member so hope youre enjoying the program and loving on your guitar!

Was unfamiliar with the incident, the band, or the song so thanks for the introduction. Canadians have a rich folk tradition. I love it.

Nicely done, Braden. Love the hip. They played Buffalo regularly and got to see them several times. Anyway, enjoyed your cover of the song.
