  • When to do Fretboard Wizard course along with TAC?

Posted by ROwens on October 19, 2023 at 6:47 am

Hello. About two months ago I signed up for both the TAC course and the Fretboard Wizard course.

My question is this…what is your all’s advice about when to begin to work on the Fretboard Wizard course work, along with the weekly TAC course work?

    Here’s a little about me…

I am in my 60’s, and have played the guitar all of my life, so I’m not a beginner. However, I have gone for long periods without playing, and so I wanted to get back into playing in a disciplined daily/weekly way, as well as to learn some new things that I knew these courses would provide. Also, I have mainly been a fingerstyle player, so I knew I would increase my skill at using a pick, etc. with these courses.

So far I have completed the 30 Days to Play, and the other introductory material, and I am now into my third regular week of TAC.

I’m just wondering about when to begin incorporating some of the Fretboard Wizard course into my daily and weekly playing. I am retired now, so have plenty of time available to play, but I don’t want to overwhelm or confuse myself by trying to do too much at once, especially at the early stages of getting used to daily lessons and playing daily, etc.

    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi,

I am rather new to TAC and guitar playing. I purchased FW recently and was also waiting a few weeks after my purchase to not overwhelm myself.

However, I started to dive into the material just this week. So my advice: just give it a try and start at once. You own the course, you can go at your own pace and always repeat things, when you feel you couldn’t grasp it the first second or nth time.

What Tony recommends is, when you don’t have the time or mood to do both, finish FW and then go back to the dailies, on that day. But I understand the feeling of missing something, as dailies vanish on a monthly scale. However, they repeat roughly on a yearly scale, so you will get a chance to redo the lessons. Another approach, if there is a week you would like to do asap is to click the heart and add it to your favorites.

But as you said that you have enough time. Just do it! The material is so well presented I don’t think that it will be too much! Just be aware of a bug on the current page: on small devices like my smartphone the link to FW leads to the old version of FW! The new version is available via tonypolecastro.com/courses/fretboard-wizard whereas the old version has tonypolecastro.com/courses/fretboard-wizard-method instead.

Welcome to TAC @ameisenstaat ! You gave some excellent advice! And I wasn’t aware of the glitch with the small electronics taking you to the original FBW. that’s not a bad thing, but the updated one is said to be better.

Welcome to the TAC community @ROwens ! Seems like your crushing through things, and you’ve gotten a handle on the dailies, and you’re not a new player, so you can incorporate FBW anytime. My suggestion is take your time going through it and really try and digest the material. I do not suggest trying to take several lessons at once. I would take quite a while with the patterns on the fretboard and really getting to know the individual notes on the strings. Ask questions in the forums when you need to. The community is always willing to help as best they can.
