Why using a guitar pick?
Posted by Hebak on August 30, 2022 at 8:01 amHey everybody,
I am new here and I have a question. Is it very wrong to play the guitar without a pick?
For me its very hard to find the right string with this thing, so I tried without it and it worked better.
Maybe you can tell me if I am the only one with this problem?
Tnx, best greatings from Austria!

There is nothing wrong with not using a pick and just using your thumb. I have learned that it’s best to at least now how to use one. I had the hardest time using a flat pick. Now i have it master (somewhat).

I never played with a pick until I started TAC and had an awful time flat picking. I was very frustrated at first thinking I’ll never get this, but I stuck with it and slowed way down. I also practiced some of the Daily Challenge Day 1 flat picking exercises regularly. It took awhile but a gradually got better at it. I also enjoy it more now and use a pick it in songs I”m learning.

Welcome to TAC!
It’s fine to use your fingers. I have enjoyed learning fingerpicking here. I would though encourage you to do the flat picking exercises and lessons also. You will be surprised what happens with time and consistency.

Hi @Hebak and welcome to TAC. There are many very accomplished guitarists that do not use a pick. Nothing wrong with using your thumb and other fingers to get the job done.
Like the others in this thread I would encourage you to use the TAC opportunity to at least explore using a pick as this offers you yet another set of tools you can use to vary and impact the sound of your guitar playing. And yes, it takes some time and patience. There are some great tips on how to hold and use the pick that is part of the “30 Days to Play” course.
All that said, if playing sans pick is your default, nothing wrong with that! 😎🎸🎶
