Day 4 – Hammer the Hurt
Responses
-
I started this lesson last night and had to quit, but I am back at it today. The pinky hammer-on gave some trouble, but I will continue to work on it.
-
Hmm…well, this challenge is definitely a challenge but it holds much potential so I’m going to keep at it!
-
Very catchy!
-
Man that second hammer on the 2,4,6,8 bars is tough to nail down, but I can feel the groove. I’ll be working on this over the weekend.
-
The picking pattern was not too hard to pick up, coordinating the hammer on with the bass note definitely adds complexity, as my fingers get in the groove of the picking roll it becomes easier. A great challenge.
-
This hurts
-
I will leave the hammer on for next time, my fingers can do the picking alright.
-
I would grade myself as a FAIL on this lesson, I can’t get the hammer ons and my rhythm stinks
-
Couldn’t get pinky hammer and bass note together. Going to need a lot more work.
-
What a great lesson! Lots to do and sounds amazing.
-
I’m having a tough time with this one. Feel like I’m lost
-
Spent about an hour on this lesson and the timing of the hammer-ons with the base note are still hurting. Almost got the first line down, sometimes I get the timing right and it sounds cool. Very tricky trying to do two hammer-ons in row. Need a lot more practice time to string the whole 12 bars together.
-
I have to say, I love the way this sounds, but OMFG!!!!! this is difficult to get my fingers wrapped around. downloaded the tablature. I’ll be working on this a while. I really like it, just for my 1st ever attempt at finger picking …. it’s challenging. Also with no finger nails when I pick the string it’s a really soft sound/ tone? not bad just different.
-
I’m an hour in and can play one measure right every now and then. Gonna have to leave it there. The challenge won today. Ugh.
-
Focused on the chords and the picking patterns, will worry about the hammer-ons a different day. Still sounds good!
-
impossible for me when including the hammer ons. Using the picking pattern to work on simple picking mechanics.
-
Couldn’t follow this one.
-
This is one is really tricky. I can play each measure by itself. I can string two measures together occasionally. I have not been able to go from one chord to another without the wheels falling off….yet. I know I will be able to. Practice. Practice. Practice.
BTW. I went on Amazon and picked up some Mississippi John Hurt. -
Well interesting, chords good, picking uneven, more practice needed. Liked the sound and will work on it over the weekend.
-
It’s tough but I like it.
-
Slow and not very good, but I did it.
-
This one throws a lot at you at one, time. Will try again tomorrow before I do the next lesson. The scotch idea seems like a good one. Cheers.
-
I’m not getting this — yet
but I sure do want to. So cool! -
I can actually do some if this. Pinky no! The hammering on I can do, but not with the base note so that’s where I’m at.
-
I can’t do this.
-
This is a tricky one for me, for sure, and frustrating to boot. Sometimes I get a couple of measures, but can’t string them together. I am going to take a break and try again. I’m an hour and a half in. Whew.
-
Tough one for me.
-
Wellllll. Gonna take some more work for me to feel good about it. Lots of different things going on.
-
I can do it just need more time
-
Gonna have to come back to this one…. It wrecked me !!!but I’m gonna stay positive and keep moving on
-
I normally do these lessons around 6:00am with a cup of coffee. Today it is 7:00pm. I think I need a Scotch instead
-
Amen
-
-
this was tough got the picking ok but the hammer ons didn’t sound right.
-
Started learning the lesson, then got into the E, E7, A, A7 and B7 chord progressions and recorded it, then played over the recording in pentatonic scales. I guess I blew off the lesson and play a session. Ha Ha. I’ll stick to the lesson next time Tony. I was just having too much fun.
-
Well, I am not going to lie, I am going to give it a whirl and see what comes of it.
-
Getting this basic pattern with hammering. Need to be more precise on timing.
-
The B hammer on while striking the low E is practically inaudible . I do enjoy the finger picking lessons. Thx TP
-
Okay well, not used to finger picking. I did okay I finally get the hammer on’s! Just hard to keep up. Pretty cool I enjoyed it!
-
Have the picking pattern down hammer-ons a little week at times but happy about the results
-
ok, for me that’s pretty tricky!
-
ayup, this one is gonna need a six of something…. I am not getting it at all. Sorry Tony, I love when you say “You already learned this in measure 1” And I didn’t really learn it at all. That’s ok I’ll still work on this bad boy before I take it on the road! Peace and love to y’all.
-
Not getting this hammer on timing at all. Will work on it some more after my frustration level diminishes.
-
I was able to do the basic finger picking. That’s a win!
-
I really enjoyed that. I love now having 4 different turnarounds to play.
-
Hard one!
-
This is maybe the third time I’ve worked on this thumb/ hammer on and I still don’t have it down! Not sure how to overcome this one.
Mississippi John Hurt I am not! -
Mississippi John Hurt style is fun but not obvious. I couldn’t play this one at all last time around but now with some effort and practice I can – slowly. More work tonight and I should be up to tempo.
-
This one is not clicking for me. I will mark complete but I am not even close
-
Shades of my old nemesis, Mississippi Timing exercise. I work on it as it comes around for years and each time I kind of, Almost, get it a little better.
-
Finger picking is like rubbing you belly and patting your head to me! It’s gonna be a lot of practice for me to get this one!
-
I love Mississippi John Hurt, and have done these type of hammer-ons for years -love them! But it is an acquired ability – muscle memory!! Anybody having trouble, go to Youtube and watch Mississippi Hurt play these hammer-on!!! Win!
Congratulations, !
Challenge complete
Come back tomorrow for your next challenge
